The tabernacle had just been completed. This had been a united effort by all the people. " On the day that the tabernacle was raised up, a cloud covered the tabernacle. " This was God's seal of approval for a job well done, and the fulfillment of His promise that He would be with them on their journey.

There could be no dispute about which path to take. When the cloud lifted, the Israelites would march, and when the cloud settled over an area , the children of Israel would camp. They only journeyed when the cloud led them.

God guided and the people trusted that God knew the way they should go. He was not distant, but ever-present to guide and protect them on their way to the Promised Land. Their part was to exercise their faith, be patient, and be ready to follow when the cloud lifted.
